Summer intern Annie Booz tells what she learned from her Vela marketing internship.
Not often does a rising college junior find an internship. Even less often does a rising college junior find an internship at a company that treats its interns like they are full-time employees. And rarely does a rising college junior find an internship where she makes lifelong connections, friendships and memories.
At Vela, I have found all of that and more.
While I was excited about this internship before starting, I was not sure what to expect. Would I get to assist with projects, or would I just be grabbing coffee for the employees?
Thankfully, I’m able to report that I have been pleased and pleasantly surprised with all that I’ve been able to do this summer. Yes, from time to time I have grabbed coffee, but it always has been alongside my co-workers when we needed a treat.
I have helped with a variety of tasks and worked with a plethora of clients throughout my time at Vela. I have created at least five website analytics reports with the use of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, and Google Analytics. I have also created social media content calendars and brainstormed content ideas. I have produced and placed content on WordPress, Facebook, Google Ads and more.
Most excitingly, I have also been able to lead some projects on my own, and take a stab at account managing, something I never really thought about prior to this internship. I have managed Vela’s estimating and budgeting project and case studies revamp project.
At Vela, I have done things I have always wanted to do. But, and more importantly, I have done things I never thought I would be able to do, or at least never thought I would be able to do as an intern. And, for the first time in my life, I have found myself taking skills I have learned in the classroom and applying them to the work I am doing in my job, which has been rewarding for me as a student.
While I am sad that my time at this wonderful company has come to an end, I am excited to return to school with a toolbox full of new skills and ideas. I leave Vela a harder worker, stronger communicator and writer, better strategic thinker and a more creative person overall. I could not be more grateful for the Vela team and all the opportunities they have given me.
